Dennis Obel OurRoots: A Message to the African Diaspora

Hey, I am Dennis Obel of OurRoots.

Let’s be real for a second. Many of us moved to places like Sydney, London, or the US because we thought that was the only way to “make it.” Others, however were forced to those places without their will. Nevertheless we worked hard and built successful lives. But lately, there’s a feeling we can’t shake—a deep dissatisfaction with Western ways of life.

The “hustle” in the West is starting to feel like a treadmill that never stops. We have the jobs and the titles, but we lack the community and the soul that only home can provide. If you’ve been feeling this Western fatigue, you’re not alone. I’ve felt it too.

That’s why I’m telling you now: our time overseas is only temporary. We are here to gather the tools, the knowledge, and the capital to fuel a total motherland transformation.

One Africa, One Home

When I talk about “home,” I’m not just talking about one set of borders. My ancestors might have roots in Uganda, but they are from elsewhere too. I view Africa as one single, beautiful home, the way most African Americans do although others try to suggest that we are made up of several cultures and therefore are not one.

Whether it’s the highlands of Ethiopia, the streets of Nairobi, or the shores of Zambia, the entire continent belongs to us.

My journey to building OurRoots wasn’t just about a business—it was about reclaiming our African identity. We need to stop seeing ourselves as citizens of small countries and start seeing ourselves as citizens of a unified continent.

Our Location is Temporary, Our Mission is Permanent, Says Dennis Obel OurRoots

The general consensus among us is shifting. We realize that we don’t just want to send money home for bills; we want to invest in Africa for the long haul. We want to be the architects of our own cities and our own future. But the biggest problem? We don’t always know how to start because the information out there is often scattered or biased.

The Information Gap is Closing

This is exactly where OurRoots comes in. Think of it as your ultimate intelligence hub for the continent, not just heritage travel. We know you want to go back, but you need real-world data:

  • Where are the real hidden gems for business and investment across the continent?

  • How do I navigate moving my life to a new African city?

  • Where can I find other diaspora brothers and sisters who want to build together?

OurRoots is the platform that gives you the information you need to live, invest, travel, and thrive anywhere on the continent. We are moving away from the “brain drain” and moving toward a world where our skills and resources flow back to where they belong.

It’s Time to Build Together

I urge you: use your time and resources to travel to Africa. Don’t just go for a holiday—go to find an opportunity. Look at the gaps in the market in Kenya, Ghana, or Zimbabwe and see how you can bridge them. Marry if you are single and want to.

The West was a great classroom, but it was never meant to be our forever home. The real work—the work that matters for our children and our African identity—is waiting for us across the continent. And that can only be done by ALL of us.

Let’s stop building other people’s dreams and start building our own. Africa is calling. Are you ready to find your way back?
