Just the other day, my Norwegian sister rang me to say she had safely touched down in Uganda for a brief trip. Knowing the tragic conflict currently ravaging the Middle East, my first question was: How on earth did you get there?

Her reply struck a chord. She bypassed the Gulf completely, flying straight from Sweden to Addis Ababa, and then directly onwards to Uganda with Ethiopian Airlines. It was a powerful reminder that direct routes between Europe and the continent already exist and are fully operational. This simple flight path is the very foundation of a winning Africa tourism strategy 2026.

The world is watching a deeply sad situation unfold in the Middle East. With major airspace closures and mass flight cancellations, tens of thousands of European expats and holidaymakers are leaving the Gulf. Global aviation reports highlight that countless transit passengers are facing daily disruptions. The same applies to a sharp decline to the USA caused by visa and immigration complications brought about by the Trump administration.

While the human toll is undeniably tragic, the reality for the travel sector is a sudden, massive shift in global movement. Our role as travel advisors is to help governments and travel operators in Africa capture this diverted market. By implementing a sharp Africa tourism strategy 2026, the continent can step up to provide a safe, welcoming alternative for stranded travellers.

Leading the Charge: Airlines and Infrastructure

As my sister’s journey proved, African airlines are already in a prime position. The Africa tourism strategy 2026 relies heavily on carriers like Ethiopian Airlines, RwandAir, and Kenya Airways aggressively expanding their direct European and American routes.

With Middle Eastern stopovers heavily disrupted, African airlines can become the primary, secure bridge connecting the West to the rest of the world. They do not just offer a detour; they offer a direct pipeline to world-class holidays.

I know this is contrary to policies recently implemented by certain African countries due to lack of reciprocity however this is a temporary arrangement to help African businesses and economies capture the ready tourist market that would have gone to the Gulf States and the USA.

  • Open the Skies: With international airlines losing millions daily on blocked east-west corridors, aviation authorities must rapidly grant new landing slots to foreign carriers. Bypassing the Gulf to land in Nairobi, Cape Town, or Accra must be made cheaper and easier.

Advice for Travel Operators and Hotels

Hotels, lodges, and tour guides cannot simply wait for the phone to ring; they must actively chase the market. This proactive approach is a vital pillar of our advised Africa tourism strategy 2026.

  • Create “Rescue” Packages: Operators should market exclusive, last-minute holiday packages aimed directly at those with cancelled Gulf trips. For example, they could offer discounted rates for extended stays to expats looking for a temporary, safe base.

  • Targeted Digital Ads: Run digital marketing campaigns in European countries where flight cancellations are highest. The message must be punchy, empathetic, and clear: “Holiday disrupted? Africa is open, safe, and waiting to welcome you.” I recently read my country Uganda has introduced branded tourist bus campaigns in Italy however that could be expensive and suitable for the long-term. What needs to be done now is advertise digitally to capture tourists who are looking for alternative destinations leading up to Easter and end of year festivities.

  • Work with digital creators: Travel digital creators such as Afrofeast reach over 1,000,000 followers and non-followers through their social media every month. Afrofeast promotes all African countries from Egypt to Kenya to South Africa and Ethiopia. Other social media travel enthusiasts especially on tiktok and youtube reach more people. African governments need to work with digital creators to reach potential tourists instead of spending money overseas.

It is a sombre time for global politics, but the tourism sector must remain practical and forward-thinking. The Africa tourism strategy 2026 is about offering a brilliant, secure haven when the world needs it most. By cutting red tape, promoting direct flight routes, and launching targeted rescue packages, African governments and travel operators can turn this massive global disruption into a golden era for local tourism. The market is searching for a new path; it is time for Africa to show them the way.
