Afrofeast Travel: 7 Powerful Reasons to Explore Africa Differently
By Dennis Obel | Afrofeast | Updated March 2026
Afrofeast travel is not your standard Africa holiday package. There are no overpriced safari lodges, no stock-photo sunsets, and no tour guide reading from a laminated card. This is real travel — raw, cultural, honest, and deeply human.
If you have been searching for a way to experience Africa that actually reflects who you are and what you value, you have found it. Here are 7 powerful reasons why Afrofeast travel is changing the game for Black and diaspora travellers around the world.

1. We Started From the Streets — Not a Boardroom
Afrofeast did not start in a corporate office. It started with food — African street food, to be exact.

Founder Dennis Obel grew up in Uganda, moved to Melbourne, and spent years documenting African food, culture, and community across Australia and beyond. What began as a food food truck and later blog evolved into something much bigger: a full afrofeast travel platform built on the belief that Africa deserves to be seen, celebrated, and explored on its own terms.
That origin matters. It means we do not look at Africa from the outside. We live it. We eat it. We travel it. And we share it honestly.
2. Afrofeast Travel Centres Black and African Experiences
Most mainstream travel platforms were not built for us. They were built for a Western audience looking at Africa as a destination to tick off a bucket list. The guides are written by people who have never eaten jollof rice at 2am in Lagos, never taken a boda-boda through Kampala, and never felt the specific joy of landing in Addis Ababa and hearing Amharic everywhere.
Afrofeast travel is different. We write for:
- The African diaspora — people who left the continent and want to come back, whether for the first time or the hundredth
- Local African explorers — people living on the continent who want to discover their own backyard
- Black international travellers — people from anywhere in the world who want to see themselves reflected in travel content
According to a 2024 report by Travel Noire, the Black travel market is one of the fastest-growing segments in global tourism, with Black American travellers alone spending over USD $109 billion on travel annually. That is a community that deserves better content. That is who we write for.
3. We Cover 54 Countries — Not Just the Safari Spots
Africa has 54 countries. Most travel content covers about five of them.
Afrofeast travel goes deeper. We have documented destinations that most travel blogs have never touched — from the waterfalls of Guinea and the dunes of Namibia, to the street food of Kampala and the ancient sites of Egypt (Kemet). We cover Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, Zanzibar, Seychelles, Mauritius, and many more.
Our YouTube channel has racked up over 311,000 views. People are hungry for this content. They just could not find it anywhere else.
We also go beyond the tourist highlights. We cover the local transport, the markets, the food stalls, the cultural protocols, and the things you actually need to know before you land. We write for people who want to live a destination, not just visit it.
@afrofeast First Impressions: Why Your Greeting is Your Passport in Africa 🌍 Ever felt a “cold” reception when visiting the continent? It might not be what you said, but how you said hello. In Africa, a greeting is more than a formality—it’s an acknowledgment of humanity. In this first snippet, I break down why the diaspora often struggles with this protocol and why it matters to the local community. Master the art of the welcome to truly connect with your roots. 🤝✨ #OurRoots #AfricanDiaspora #CulturalProtocol #Ubuntu #HeritageTravel
4. Our Ambassador Amen Proves Black Travellers Belong Everywher
One of the most powerful things about afrofeast travel is what our brand ambassador Amen represents.
Amen is an Ethiopian (Habesha) traveller and content creator who has built a significant presence across Southeast Asia — Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. Her posts have generated Afrofeast platform millions of views, and her presence in places like Nha Trang, Bangkok, Phuket, and Da Nang sends a message that is louder than any caption: Black women belong in every corner of the world, and they look magnificent there.

This is not a contradiction of our African identity. It is an extension of it. Afrofeast travel is about documenting the world through a Black and African lens — wherever that takes us. Southeast Asia is our second home, and Amen’s work there is some of the most powerful content we have ever produced.

5. We Are Honest About the Hard Parts
Here is something you will not find on most travel blogs: the truth.
Afrofeast travel does not pretend Africa is perfect. We do not hide the visa challenges, the infrastructure gaps, the scams to watch out for, or the emotional complexity of returning to a place you left behind. We talk about all of it — because our audience deserves honesty, not a highlight reel.
We also talk about the politics of travel. The mainstream travel industry has historically failed Black and African travellers — through exclusion, misrepresentation, and a lack of practical, culturally relevant information. We are not afraid to say that. And we are not afraid to do something about it.
Our blog post on heritage travel and emotional tourism goes deep on this — exploring why the standard OTA (Online Travel Agency) model simply does not work for diaspora travellers seeking meaningful connection with the continent.
6. Afrofeast Travel Is Built for the Diaspora
If you are part of the African diaspora — whether you were born in Africa and moved abroad, or you are a second or seventh-generation African living in Australia, the UK, the US, or Canada — afrofeast travel was made with you in mind.
We understand that coming back to Africa is not just a holiday. It is emotional. It is complicated. It is deeply personal. You might be visiting a country you left as a child. You might be going to a place your grandparents came from. You might be searching for something you cannot quite name.
That is why we are building OurRoots.Africa — a dedicated heritage travel platform that helps diaspora travellers prepare emotionally, culturally, and practically for the journey home. It is one of the most important things we have ever created, and it sits at the heart of everything we do. You can find the most recent updates about OurRoots.Africa here.
Afrofeast travel is not just about getting on a plane. It is about understanding where you are going, why it matters, and how to make the most of every moment when you get there.
7. We Build Technology That Actually Works for Africa

Most travel technology was built for the developed world — fast internet, credit cards, and seamless booking systems. Africa is different. And afrofeast travel is one of the few platforms that actually acknowledges that.
Through our corporate arm at afrofeast.travel, we build practical travel technology solutions designed for the realities of African markets — low bandwidth environments, mobile-first users, and communities that have been left out of the mainstream travel tech ecosystem. Besides OurRoots.Africa, we are also building Hyloti, an African and Southeast Asia focused travel app; we will let you know when it is ready.
We are not just a blog. We are a travel technology company. And we believe that technology should serve people, not the other way around.
My final thoughts: Travel That Moves You
Afrofeast travel is more than a platform. It is a movement.
It is the Ugandan traveller from Melbourne who decided Africa deserved better storytelling. It is the Ethiopian model turning heads on the beaches of Vietnam. It is the diaspora traveller landing in Accra for the first time, heart pounding, finally home. It is the local explorer in Nairobi discovering that their own city is one of the most extraordinary places on earth.
We believe travel should do more than move people from one place to another. It should build bridges, spark curiosity, and create real impact — for travellers and for the communities they visit.
If that sounds like the kind of travel you have been looking for, you are in the right place.
