If you were in Melbourne when the gourmet food truck scene was just exploding, you couldn’t miss the vibrant presence of Dennis Obel Afrofeast. A top 10 food truck in Melbourne, our food truck was more than a vehicle; it was a moving piece of art, wrapped in the iconic, bold geometric patterns of the Ndebele culture.

That truck was the beginning of Afrofeast more than 10 years ago, in 2013 to be precise. As a pioneer in the space, I, Dennis Obel, wanted to prove that African cuisine deserved a gourmet stage. We were on a mission to redefine what people thought about our flavours and Africa, serving up experiences on wheels that had never been seen before on Australian streets.

The Global Evolution: From the Streets to the Screen

As the gourmet truck became a Melbourne icon, the vision started to grow. I realized that the hunger for our culture wasn’t just physical—it was digital. Afrofeast transitioned from the streets into a global food and travel blog, documenting the intersection of African heritage and world travel.

This era took our brand international, fueled by diverse African perspectives. Our official Amen Afrofeast Brand Ambassador, who hails from Ethiopia, brings that deep east African heritage to our global narrative. You can see the results of this collaboration in our Amen Afrofeast videos. Whether it’s Amen exploring the luxury of Vietnam cruises or beachside shoots in Nha Trang, the message is clear: our culture is world-class.

Dennis Obel Afrofeast Live from China: Seeking New Inspirations

Right now, the journey continues in a new direction. I am currently traveling through China, exploring the deep culinary traditions and bustling markets of the East and seeking new knowledge. As the founder, these solo explorations are where I find the next level of inspiration for the Afrofeast group.

While Amen represents our global style and Ethiopian roots in places like Vietnam, my time in China is about digging deeper into how different cultures connect and how we can learn from them. I’m documenting these moments to bring fresh perspectives back to our community.

Building a Digital “Village Square” at OurRoots

These global experiences—from the Melbourne curbside to the streets of China—are the fuel for ourroots. It taught me that people from all over—including our incredible community in Adelaide—were looking for a “source of truth” for the diaspora.

Even though our pioneer days started in Melbourne, the fact that people searching for African cuisine in Adelaide find their way to us tells me that our legacy has traveled further than the truck ever could. ourroots is our digital “village square.”

The Heart of the Afrofeast Group

Even as I explore China, I never forget those early mornings with the Ndebele inspired truck that turned heads in Melbourne. Whether you’ve been with us since Melbourne, followed our blog through Asia and Africa, or you’re just discovering us from Adelaide or Alice Springs, you are part of this story. My mission as Dennis Obel remains the same: to ensure that when you try to find us, you find the authentic, gourmet, and pioneering fighting spirit that started it all.
