Heritage Travel to Africa: What 225+ Diaspora Travellers Taught Us | OurRoots.Africa
If you’re thinking about heritage travel to Africa, you’re not alone.
A few days ago, we asked our community one big question:
What does it really take to get ready for a heritage journey back to Africa?
More than 400 members of the African diaspora started our survey. After a careful clean-up of the data, we ended up with 225 strong, detailed responses from people who are planning or dreaming about a roots trip.
To everyone who took part: thank you.
Thank you for your time.
Thank you for your honesty.
Thank you for sharing your hopes, fears, and questions about reconnecting with your roots.
We didn’t run this survey just to collect numbers. We wanted to listen. What you shared has shaped how we think about heritage travel, identity, and support for the diaspora community.
Your answers confirmed some of our ideas, challenged others, and gave us a clear roadmap for what OurRoots should build next.
Key Insight #1: “Am I African Enough?” Is the Biggest Pain Point

One of our main questions was about identity anxiety in heritage travel.
We asked how worried you are about being accepted or feeling “African enough” on your trip.
- 66.7% of respondents said this was a major or moderate concern.
So the main challenge isn’t just flights, hotels, or what to pack. For many people in the diaspora, the hardest part is emotional:
- Will I fit in?
- Will people see me as “really” African?
- Will I be judged for my accent, clothes, or not speaking the language?
This was the top pain point in the entire survey.
This is a clear message: we can’t just talk about visas and airport transfers. The emotional side of the journey matters just as much as the logistics.
Key Insight #2: Community Is the Support You Want Most
We also asked how important community is when planning a roots trip.
How valuable would it be to have an ongoing community of other heritage travellers around you?
- 65.8% said a community would be extremely or very valuable.
This was the highest-rated solution we tested.
You told us you don’t want to walk this road alone. You want:
- A private space to ask questions without feeling silly
- Other Black and African diaspora travellers who “get it”
- People you can talk to before, during, and after your trip
- A place to share stories, wins, worries, and culture
In short, heritage travel to Africa works best in community, not in isolation.
You’re not just looking for information; you’re looking for a circle of people who understand the emotional side of going “home”.
Key Insight #3: You’re Open to an AI-Powered Cultural Guide

We also explored how you feel about AI travel tools in this space.
We asked if you’d find value in a 24/7 AI assistant that:
- is trained on authentic Ghanaian culture
- can answer questions about culture and logistics
- is designed to offer emotional support, not just dry facts
- 63.1% of you said yes, this would be helpful.
This tells us that many heritage travellers are open to using AI as a cultural guide, as long as it’s:
- respectful
- accurate
- and grounded in real local knowledge
Used well, technology can help you feel more supported and informed, not more distant.
The Big Surprise: “Well-Prepared but Still Anxious”

One result really stood out.
We found that 40.9% of respondents:
- feel well prepared with blogs, vlogs, and travel guides and
- still feel highly anxious about their heritage journey
So even after consuming a lot of content on Ghana and other African destinations, the anxiety doesn’t fully disappear.
This reveals something important about roots travel:
Being “prepared” isn’t just about information.
It’s also about preparing your heart, identity, and emotions.
A heritage trip is not just another holiday. It’s a deep personal journey that touches on history, family, belonging, and sometimes grief. Traditional travel guides don’t always reach those layers.
What We’re Building Next with OurRoots.Africa
Because of your feedback, we’re now officially moving into the build phase for the OurRoots.Africa platform. Ofcourse the survey is still ongoing and you can help us get more feedback here: OurRoots.Africa.
Our first version (MVP – Minimum Viable Product), to be launched in March 2026, will focus on three key areas you highlighted as essential for safe, supported heritage travel to Africa.
1. Emotional & Identity Preparation
We’re creating tools and content that speak directly to the “Am I African enough?” question.
This will include:
- Gentle, honest guides on identity, belonging, and expectations
- Reflections and prompts to help you process your feelings before you travel
- Stories from other diaspora travellers who have already made their roots trip
Our goal is to help you feel more grounded in yourself before you step off the plane.
2. A Private Community Hub for Heritage Travellers
We’re building a community space for people planning or returning from a heritage trip to Ghana and, over time, other African countries.
Inside this hub, you’ll be able to:
- Meet other African diaspora travellers on similar journeys
- Ask questions without worrying about judgement
- Share honest stories from your trip – the beautiful parts and the hard parts
- Support others who are just starting to plan their roots travel
We want this to feel less like a random Facebook group and more like a warm living room for the diaspora.
3. Amen – Your 24/7 AI Cultural Assistant
We’re also building Amen, your AI cultural assistant:
- Available 24/7 on your phone
- Trained on authentic Ghanaian culture and context
- Designed to answer questions with kindness, clarity, and respect
Amen won’t replace real people or real community. Instead, it will sit beside them—helping with:
- last-minute questions before you fly
- cultural norms you’re unsure about
- reassurance when you hit those “Is this normal?” moments on the ground
Walking This Heritage Journey With You
We’re building all of this with you, not just for you. You’ve VALIDATED our assumptions! And we used different industry validation metrics to come up with this result. As you can see below, we exceeded the target (startup idea validation metrics) by far, except in one area only.

Many of you ticked “yes” to being contacted for interviews and deeper conversations. We’ll be reaching out to hear more of your stories and to test early versions of the platform.
This is just the beginning of OurRoots.Africa and of our work in the heritage travel to Africa space. Ghana is not the destination, it is the starting point. We plan to expand continentally in the next few years. And other startup ideas are underway.
Thank you for trusting us with your experiences.
Thank you for helping us design something real, honest, and useful for the African diaspora.
We received significant response from the African diaspora globally, from Serbia to Canada to Ireland to Brasilia. That is proof you will come to your people’s defense when called upon.
Africa is rising, and we are positioning the Motherland for a peaceful takeover. We may not be there when it finally happens, but we know it is GOING to happen. Don’t ask how we know – empaths know a lot of things others don’t. But that is for another day.
