Why Southeast Asia Feels Right for 2025

Because I live Down Under, every time I think about where to travel next, my mind drifts back to Southeast Asia.

That should not mean I travel Southeast Asia because I live in Australia; it started way long before I even set foot in this country.

Matter of fact, Southeast Asia is warm, chaotic in a beautiful way, and still one of the few regions where your money stretches far while giving you deep, rich experiences. And let’s not even start on that spicy food – DELICIOUS!

In 2025, travel trends are pointing east again — people are craving culture, authenticity, and places that make you slow down.

And nowhere does that better than Southeast Asia.

Here are my top five destinations to consider if you’re planning a trip this December or next year.

1. Best Destinations Southeast Asia 2025: Thailand — Culture, Beach & The Famous Smile

Thailand has been a favourite for decades, but 2025 feels like a new chapter. Travel + Leisure even named it “Destination of the Year 2025” — proof that the Land of Smiles is back in full swing.

Why go:

• Bangkok for street food, temples, and city energy.

And the night street performances are just amazing around December (Bangkok Street Performer).

And its even best when you are with your girlfriend or boyfriend

• Phuket, for beaches and turquoise water.
• Chiang Mai for calm mornings, mountains, and lantern festivals.

Where to go & what to do:

• Wander Khao San Road by night — cheap food, neon lights, and great people-watching. Stay at Buddy Lodge if you can. It is central.

• Visit Wat Arun or Wat Pho early morning before the crowds. Early morning is best during hot weather. Bangkok can be VERY hot.

• Try a Thai cooking class or a massage school in Chiang Mai.

• Join the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan (for the brave).

• For calm beaches, try Railay Bay in Krabi.

Travel tip: Visit between November and March — less rain, better sunsets. AVOID during the hot months.

Vietnam continues to rise fast on the travel map and to me, tops the list for affordability and beaches. It’s lively, photogenic, and full of contrast — old towns, busy streets, and peaceful countryside.

• Ha Long Bay for that dream-like boat cruise.

• Hoi An for ancient charm and tailor-made outfits.

• Da Nang for beaches with city life nearby.

Where to go & what to do:

• Cruise through Ha Long Bay at sunset — it’s unreal.

• Wander Hoi An’s lantern streets at night.

• Try egg coffee in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

• Visit Marble Mountains or the Golden Bridge in Da Nang.

• Party at Bùi Viện Street in Ho Chi Minh City.

Why 2025: Vietnam’s pushing slow travel and homestays — the perfect mix of real and relaxed.

Travel tip: Visit the north in spring, central coast in autumn, and stay flexible — Vietnam rewards curiosity.

Indonesia — Beyond Bali

When you say “Indonesia,” most people think of Bali — and fair enough, it’s stunning. But 2025 is about going further.

Over 10 million tourists arrived in early 2025 — even more than Thailand!

Why go:

• Kuala Lumpur for skyline views and nightlife.

• Penang for heritage and street art.

• Langkawi for beaches and waterfalls.

• Borneo for orangutans and jungle adventure.

Where to go & what to do:

• Hit Changkat Bukit Bintang for bars and music.

• Eat everything on Jalan Alor Night Market.

• In Penang, walk George Town’s murals and try nasi kandar.

• Ride the Langkawi Sky Bridge or relax at Tanjung Rhu Beach.

• Siem Reap for Angkor Wat — ancient, massive, unforgettable.

• Kampot for riverside chill.

• Koh Rong for beaches that feel untouched.

Where to go & what to do:

• Watch sunrise at Angkor Wat — no words can prepare you. But hey, the sun doesn’t rise every day so dont get disappointed if you miss it!

• Chill on Pub Street with music and $1 beers.

• Kayak in Kampot or visit the pepper farms.

• Explore Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace and markets.

• Spend a few lazy days on Koh Rong Sanloem — barefoot bliss.

Why 2025:
Cambodia’s transport network is improving, making it easier to connect beaches, temples, and towns.

Travel tip: Don’t rush it — Cambodia grows on you the longer you stay. If African, travel by bus – dont ask me why.
