A household name, it plied several routes within Kenya and regionally to Dar es Salaam and Rwanda. I used it several times between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, the last time in 2009, swearing never to use it again!
Gateway, a Uganda bus company with headquarters in Tororo, was well-known in Uganda and Kenya and plied the Kenyan route from Eastern Uganda (Malaba, Tororo, Mbale, Soroti) to Nairobi. We also used to use it from Kampala to Tororo.
The winds have changed though. Akamba is dead, and Gateway is struggling. Newcomers have entered the market and competition is stiff. Besides the larger 40-something seater buses, we also have smaller shuttles/coaches that accommodate up to 14 passengers.
East African buses have main stops around River Road (Nairobi), Ubungo (Dar es Salaam), and Dewinton Road (Kampala). River Road and Ubungo are crowded places – you gotta be alert. In 2007, kids in Ubungo almost made off with my suitcase; they would have been $5000 richer.
Dewinton is upscale, far beyond the chaotic downtown Kampala. Back in the day Bimbo Ice Cream on Dewinton Road, was our depo (dont ask me what that means).

Bebeto has been operating in East Africa for a while now, running routes between Kampala, Nairobi, and Juba. They’ve mentioned plans to launch a Nairobi to Addis Ababa route, but as of November 2025, this hasn’t been confirmed.
