10 Best Kenya Beach Getaways December 2025

I’m from Uganda, but I have to admit — I envy Kenya’s coastal cities for their stunning beaches. You see, Uganda is landlocked (a sad story indeed). Of course, we’ve got our treasures — Lake Victoria, the dense rainforests, and powerful waterfalls — but still, there’s something special about the Kenyan coast in December. The sun shines brighter, schools close, families travel, and everyone’s planning one of those unforgettable Kenya beach getaways this December.

If you’re like me, you know December isn’t complete without the ocean. I’ve explored Diani, Malindi, Mombasa, Watamu, and a few hidden beaches along the coast. Each has its own character, but all remind me how lucky East Africans are to live near such beauty.

So if you’re thinking about a quick holiday, here are my favourite Kenya beach getaways for December — perfect for locals, East African travellers, or first-time visitors looking for some sun and sea before the year ends.

Kenya Beach Getaways December: Why December is the Best Time to Visit the Coast

It’s simple:

  • The weather is warm and sunny.

  • The mood is festive — everyone is smiling.

  • Hotels and beaches are full of life.

  • And hey, if you are a man, I mean a real man, you gotta be happy LOL.

It’s that time to unwind, forget about work, and just enjoy being by the sea.

1. Diani Beach — Always a Winner

Diani Beach, Kenya's best beach

Diani is one of those beaches that never gets old. The sand is soft, the water is blue, and there’s always something to do.

You can relax under a palm tree, try water sports, or go for a sunset walk. It’s great for couples, families, or groups of friends.

Tip: It gets busy in December, so book your hotel early. If you want peace, stay around Galu Beach — it’s quieter.

2. Watamu Beach — Calm and Beautiful

Watamu beach in Kenya is one of my personal favourites. It’s clean, peaceful, and easy to love.

The town is small, but the beaches are beautiful. You can go snorkelling in the marine park or stay in one of the cute boutique hotels like Medina Palms or Hemingways.

It’s a perfect spot if you want a quiet holiday with nice food and a beautiful view.

3. Malindi — Old Charm with a Modern Touch

About 20 something kilometres away by taxi or bike is Malindi. A Swahili town, Malindi has a relaxed vibe that makes you slow down. You’ll find a mix of Italian and Swahili culture, old streets, and lovely beaches. Go for their Pilau – delicious and quite cheap!

Malindi is perfect if you want good food, nice beaches, and less noise.

4. Mombasa — For the Fun and Energy

Mombasa is full of life. There’s music everywhere, great seafood, and people in holiday mood.

If you like fun, try Nyali or Bamburi. You’ll find beach bars, hotels, and clubs like B-Club where people dance all night.

Top picks:

5. Lamu — Peace and Culture

Lamu — Peace and Culture

Lamu is different. It’s quiet, slow, and full of history.
No cars — only donkeys, boats, and the sound of the ocean.

It’s a beautiful place for couples or anyone who wants to disconnect.
Try a sunset dhow ride and eat some fresh seafood in Shela Village.

6. Tiwi Beach — Hidden Gem

Tiwi is right next to Diani, but far less crowded.
If you want privacy and peace, this is the place.
It’s great for a weekend escape or a short romantic trip.

7. Nyali & Bamburi — City Meets Beach

If you don’t want to go too far from Mombasa, these two beaches are perfect.
They’re full of life — beach activities, camel rides, music, and seafood.

Perfect for short breaks if you’re travelling from Nairobi or Kisumu.

8. Kilifi — Cool, Creative, and Fun

Kilifi is located along the way to Watamu on the Kenyan coast. Kilifi is becoming popular for its relaxed vibe and music scene.
If you like art, food, and good company, this is your spot.

The Kilifi New Year Festival [Beneath the Baobab Festival] brings people from all over Kenya — it’s a great way to end the year.

9. Shanzu — Easy and Family-Friendly

Shanzu has many beach hotels and is easy to reach from Mombasa town.
It’s great for families and people who just want to relax without long travel.

10. Msambweni — Quiet and Untouched

Msambweni is one of the calmest beaches on the coast.
It’s not very commercial, and that’s what makes it special.
Great for couples or solo travellers who just want peace and space.

Bonus: Safari + Beach Combo

If you’ve got a few extra days, do both.
Start with a safari at Tsavo or Amboseli, then finish by relaxing in Diani.
It’s the perfect mix of adventure and rest.

Before You Go…

  • Book early. Hotels fill up fast in December.

  • Pack light. It’s hot — you won’t need much.

  • Try local food. Swahili dishes taste best by the sea.

  • Slow down. The coast runs on “pole pole” time.

  • Kenya Airways. Kenya Airways is a sucker, so book your SGR or

The End

Kenya’s coast is magic. Every December, people from all over head down to the ocean — not just for fun, but to recharge.

Whether you go to Diani, Watamu, or Lamu, you’ll come back feeling lighter.
You don’t need a fancy resort to enjoy it.
Sometimes, all you need is sunshine, salt water, and good company.
