Festivals in Uganda Today

There are so many festivals in Uganda today that you can enjoy while visiting. The Baganda, a major tribe in Uganda, have a saying that goes “kiUganda kinyuma mubyokusaga”. Loosely translated, “Uganda is fun in a joking manner”, lol. From the thunderous drums of the Nyege Nyege Festival to the life of the party – Zzina Festival, each event presents music, dance, and tradition. Let’s discover all there is to know about about these vibrant festivals, shall we?  

1. Nyege Nyege Festival

Nyege Nyege is held annual festival held in Jinja. It is a 3-day celebration of East African art, music, and culture. This festival attracts visitors from all walks of the world. 

The Nyege Nyege Festival was first held in 2015 and has since become one of Uganda’s and Africa’s largest, and most vibrant festivals, ever. This dynamic event showcases our diverse talent through workshops, live performances, and exhibitions. 

You can expect traditional African music, contemporary art, fashion, food, and cultural activities. Oh, and by the way, this amazing festival is organised by none other than a collective of artists and musicians known as the Nyege Nyege Tapes. 

Here’s some even better news – all roads lead to Jinja this September for an unforgettable Nyege Nyege experience. Just have enough money for entry which is 250k Ugandan shillings, plus some extra for the drinks and whatever your heart desires, lol.

2. Rolex Festival

Fun Fact: In Uganda, we don’t wear a Rolex, we eat it. 

Uganda is a land of several vibrant tribes, each with its delicious dishes. But there’s one food that transcends tribal lines and unites the nation: The Mighty Rolex! Oh yeah! You heard that right. 

Forget tribal limitations, this food festival’s got national ambitions! Did you know that ROLEX has become a must-do on Uganda’s tourism calendar? Believe it or not, this isn’t about fancy watches (though a celebratory Rolex wouldn’t hurt! :). 

The Ugandan ROLEX aka, omelette rolled with chapati (flatbread) is something way tastier – not your fancy watches. Think finger-lickin’ good!

Since 2016, Rolex has transformed from a regional food to a national nosh-up, even catching the eye of CNN!. That simply proves that ROLEX isn’t just a Ugandan thing, it’s a flavour explosion with global appeal.

Here’s a breakdown of the festival based on factual information:

• Activities: The Rolex Festival features food vendors showcasing various Rolex recipes, including those with chicken, beef, vegetables, and even international influences. 
• Growth and Recognition: The Ugandan Rolex was ranked by CNN as the number one fast-growing food in Uganda.
• Location and Frequency: The first edition was held at the Uganda Museum grounds. However, it has then shifted to Lugogo Cricket Oval. 

3. Doadoa Festival

Did you know that the Doadoa Festival is a performing arts market and not a traditional festival? That’s right! This festival focuses on East Africa and aims to connect professionals, artists, and businesses in the creative industry. 

Here’s a breakdown of why the Doadoa festival is a must-attend: 

• A platform for Networking and Learning: Are you a professional interested in the arts industry to share ideas, network, and even learn from each other? Well, the Doadoa Festival provided such a platform. This includes festival directors, artists, and promoters, among others. 
• Cultural Exchange: Doadoa celebrates the diversity of East African artistic traditions hence, bringing artists together which then promotes appreciation and understanding of different cultures. 

Currently, there is a 2024 edition happening on 24th May 2024 though it’s a more focused event. This year, Doadoa is launching the East Africa Festival Network, which aims to strengthen collaboration between regional festivals.

4. Vumbula Uganda Festival

Here is another mind-blowing festival you must attend – The Vumbula Festival. This 2-day festival celebrates Uganda’s art, music, culture and beauty, all spiced with tourism exhibitions and live performances. That’s to say the Nile Nest Resort, Jinja is gonna be LIT. 

The Vumbula Festival is happening between May 31st and 3rd June 2024. What’s your excuse for missing? The entrance fee is Ugandan shillings 100,000k for unlimited fun and enjoyment over the two days. 

But the festivities don’t stop there. The Vumbula Festival is also a platform to celebrate and preserve Uganda’s diverse cultural heritage. This is your chance to witness and finally understand the beauty and richness of our country’s cultural tapestry.

5. Zzina Festival Uganda

Did you know that “Zzina” simply means dance? Oh, yes! This festival is all about dancing. Get those Gideon boots ready for this event sometime next year. The Zzina Festival also referred to as Zzina Carnival or Zzina Beach Fest, is one of Uganda’s entertainment events primarily focused on music, dance, and fun activities. Oh, yeah! You heard that right. 

Here’s a breakdown:

• Focus on Ugandan Music: This festival showcases a variety of Ugandan musicians, both established artists like Cindy, Vinka, etc and up-and-coming talents.
• Family-Friendly Activities: The event goes beyond just music, expect activities like boat cruises, swimming, zip-lining, paddle boating, and even camel rides.
• End-of-Year Celebration: Traditionally, the Zzina Festival seemed to be held around the end of the year. For instance, the 2023 edition occurred in December. However, this year’s event took place on the 5th of May 2024. Unfortunately, these dates aren’t cast in stone.
• Organised by Galaxy FM: That’s right! The one and only Galaxy FM, a Ugandan radio station, takes charge of organising the Festival.

6. Kadodi  Karnival

The Kadodi Karnival is a celebration of the Gishu culture (a tribe from Mbale district of Eastern Uganda), specifically focused on the Kadodi dance and an upcoming Imbalu ceremony. It’s a significant coming-of-age ritual that marks a boy’s transition into manhood and involves weeks long dance to prepare the boys for circumcision. As children we followed Kadodi dance for hours and came home late in the night – it’s fun!

Here’s what we know about the Kadodi Karnival:

• Kadodi dance: The highlight is the Kadodi dance. This energetic dance is performed by Imbalu participants (boys undergoing circumcision rituals) and their escorts. But the onlookers can also enjoy it. 
• Focuses on Gishu culture: The Kadodi Karnival showcases traditional Gishu practices like food, drinks, and music. 
• Celebrates Imbalu: Did you know that the Imbalu ceremony is a significant cultural event for the Bagishu people, and is held every two years in August and December?
• Inaugural Event: According to The New Vision, this was the first Kadodi Karnival. The most recent Kadodi Karnival occurred on Saturday, May 4th, 2024 at UMA Show Grounds. This was likely the first or inaugural event, so there may not be confirmed dates for future festivals. However Kadodi is common in small townships wherever the Gishu have settled. 7. Kampala City Festival

Kampala City Festival (KCF) is a yearly event that happens every first week of October in Kampala, Uganda. The festival celebrates culture, unity, and social life. 

And did I mention this festival is considered one of the largest street parties in East Africa? True story. The festival is also a great networking opportunity. Oh, and it’s become a major attraction, drawing in crowds and promoting various aspects of Uganda. 

Here’s a breakdown of the festival’s key features:

• Celebration of Culture and Unity: This festival brings together people from within or outside of Kampala to celebrate the city’s rich culture and foster a sense of unity.
• Showcasing Business and Creativity: This event also features displays and activities related to business, fashion, art, music, technology, and more.

8. Enkuka Festival 

The Enkuka Festival is a vibrant celebration of Ugandan tradition, culture, music, and unity. It is held annually and has become a source of national pride and attracts visitors from all over, especially those seeking an immersive experience.

Here’s some key information about the Enkuka Festival:

• Meaning: The name “Enkuka” means “sunrise” in Luganda. This reflects the festival’s celebration of new beginnings and cultural renewal.
• Origins: The Buganda Kingdom, but has since grown into a national event.

9. The Nile Festival
