Gorilla Trekking

Are you planning a Gorilla Trek adventure? Let me share my experience. This story will transport you to the heart of the African jungle.

As we ventured into the dense forest, the crisp air whistled against our ears, refreshing our senses. Every step revealed a new sound: the rustle of leaves, twigs snapping, and exotic birds’ sweet melodies. Our guide, well-versed in the jungle’s secrets, stopped suddenly, his gaze fixed straight ahead. ‘Look,’ he whispered, his voice barely audible. We froze. I swear you’d hear our hearts pounding.

Like a reflex, we rushed behind him to see what it was, only to find a beautiful family of gorillas. They sat proudly, keeping an eye on their young ones. Another baby had clung to its mother’s arm, watching with curiosity.

That was it, the moment we had all been waiting for. But the truth is, getting to that point wasn’t easy. Gorilla Trekking is an adventure that allows you to learn and explore new things. But it needs careful planning. So, these simple tips are all you need to prepare and enjoy the best gorilla trekking adventure, ever. Read on.

1. Choose a Location

Before you embark on that journey, you must choose the right destination – some top trekking gorilla destinations to consider include Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Every destination has something unique to offer.

  • Uganda: It is popular for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is ideal for adventure seekers. The overall cost as of 2025/2026 is $800 per person for foreign non-residents, $700 per person for foreign residents, $500 per person for Africans and finally, 300,000 UGX per person for East African citizens.
  • Rwanda: If you want a luxurious experience on a budget, go to Volcanoes National Park. The costs range between $25 to $1500, depending on the places you want to visit. This price also varies whether you’re a solo traveller or as a group.
  • DRC: This is an excellent destination for thrill seekers yearning for Virunga National Park. However, it’s not as developed as the Uganda and Rwanda destinations. This park offers you an exemplary experience. The cost for entry ranges between $100 to $400, which is the cheapest package compared to the other two.

Pro Tip: Before you settle on a destination, research and choose the one that fits your budget and style.

2. Book in Advance

Gorilla permits are limited, hence the need to book your spot early. Only a few people are allowed to visit the gorillas to protect them. Therefore, you should book your permit months in advance. Avoid last-minute bookings during the busy months, like June to September.

Speaking out of experience, I almost missed my spot. Luckily, I had a tour guide who helped with booking. So, make sure to book your permit as early as possible.

3. Pack the Right Gear

When hiking in the forest, you must understand that it’s always muddy, wet, and unpredictable. So, you must have the right gear for maximum comfort and safety. Below are some things you can pack.

  • Sturdy hiking boots: The trails are always steep and slippery
  • Rain jacket: Even on a sunny day, you will be surprised it rains in the evening
  • Gloves: Thick gloves protect your hands from sharp objects
  • Insect repellant: Mosquitos are everywhere.
  • Snacks and water: The trek can take hours, so stay energised.

Most people often underestimate the mud. To be on the safe side, pack waterproof boots. Come prepared for the hike so you can enjoy it fully.

4. Respect the Gorillas

I can not emphasise this enough: always respect the gorillas. It’s an unforgettable moment when you finally see them. Remember, they’re wild animals, after all.  Always remember you are the guest in their home. This means you must keep a distance of at least 7 meters, speak softly, and do not underestimate what they can do.

For instance, a young gorilla got curious on my previous trek and came closer to our group. It was exciting but a little scary, too. Again, our guide came to our rescue.

Pro Tip: Always listen to your guide in such scenarios. They know how to keep you safe during the trek.

5. Support the Local Community

It’s not about gorilla trekking, having fun, then leaving. Your efforts help promote wildlife conservation. You can even do more. For instance, stay in the locally owned lodges, buy handmade souvenirs, or tip the guides. During my trip, I visited the local villa. Here, the locals showed up and performed their traditional music and dances. They also shared some crafts; some were free, and we bought some.
