About Afrofeast

Our Story

Afrofeast was founded by Dennis Obel (also known as Dennis Grace), an Australian of Ugandan origin who holds dual citizenship and resides in the Northern Territory of Australia. The inspiration for Afrofeast traces back to a pivotal trip Dennis made in May 2010 to New York City while on holiday from East Timor. It was there that he experienced the vibrant food truck scene, particularly Dominic’s Italian Sausage, which sparked the idea to create something that would celebrate his African heritage and culture.

The concept for Afrofeast was born in 2013 in Brunswick West, Melbourne, with operations officially beginning in March 2014 in Eltham North, Victoria. Dennis’ vision was to bring authentic African street and traditional cuisine to Australia, pioneering a food experience that hadn’t been seen before.

A Trailblazer in African Cuisine

Afrofeast holds the distinct honor of being the first African food truck in Australia. Initially, it stood alone in introducing African culinary delights, but soon after, other Afro-Caribbean food trucks joined the scene, broadening the cultural food landscape.

Our Menu

Afrofeast’s menu has always been rooted in authentic African street and traditional food, featuring dishes from South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. The standout item was the Bunny Chow, a South African dish that became immensely popular with patrons. The Ugandan Rolex, filled with vegetarian goodness, and sweet potato wedges were also fan favorites, delighting both adults and children alike.

Events and Collaborations

Between 2014 and 2017, Afrofeast made its mark at many of Melbourne’s largest events and festivals, including Soulfest, Finders Keepers, Strawberry Fields Festival, White Night Melbourne, Moomba Festival, and Tessler Tulip Festival, among others. The food truck also collaborated with prominent Australian brands such as Coca-Cola, City of Melbourne, Latrobe University, Monash University, and more.

Afrofeast has been spotlighted in numerous leading magazines, blogs, and newspapers, such as the Herald Sun, Broadsheet, News.com.au, Beat Magazine, Weekend Notes, Salt Magazine, City Journal, and SBS Food. Notably, it was featured in Australia’s premier Sunday Herald Sun Magazine in 2014.

Trademark and Brand

The name “Afrofeast” and its logo are registered trademarks. Originating in 2013, Afrofeast was unique in its name and concept, holding the “first-to-use” distinction. With increasing popularity, Afrofeast officially registered its trademark in 2019 to protect its brand amidst growing interest from outside Australia.
